Due to continued growth in our businesses, we have a requirement for a Health and Safety Coordinator to join our Team at our Peterborough, Ontario location.

 

 

General Accountability

The Health and Safety Coordinator will assist the SMS Manager/Senior Health and Safety Coordinator in ensuring compliance and maintenance of the Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems and applicable legal requirements.

 

 

Specific Accountabilities

  • Assist in the development and maintenance of Occupational Health and Safety Policies and Procedures.
  • Assist and coordinate the execution of the Occupational Health and Safety objectives.
  • Lead and participate with the JHSC, schedule and prepare meeting agendas and minutes.
  • Ensure new employee orientation and recurrent Health and Safety training and documentation is completed.
  • Develop, deliver and maintain safety training programs with up-to-date legislation including but not limited to, orientation of new hires, WHMIS/GHS, Aerial lift platform, Forklift, Fall Arrest, Confined Space, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, etc.
  • Regularly monitor the Company's performance on safety aspects, supervisors' observations and other items as directed, including to provide options to mitigate or eliminate gaps.
  • Conduct worksite incident and accident investigations and workplace hazard assessments, including to provide recommendations to reduce or eliminate hazards.
  • Ensure safety audits are completed on a timely basis.
  • Maintain an up-to-date MSDS/SDS electronic library.
  • Conduct required regular workplace inspections, special inspections and accident investigations.
  • Correct unsafe conditions or practices and ensure hazards are controlled until corrective action is taken.
  • Support SMS Manager/Senior Health and Safety Coordinator and Human Resources management on WSIB matters, return-to-work, job accommodation/modification requests, medical leaves and all Safety/SMS matters that require corrective action.
  • Responsible for Hazardous Waste Management initiatives; Product collection, consolidation and disposal programs.
  • Assist in the processing, tracking, recording and tracking of accident and incident data.
  • Complete writing assignments according to set standards regarding order, clarity, conciseness, style, and terminology.
  • Edit, standardize, or make changes to material prepared by SMS Manager. Research information and create reports.
  • Provide administrative and coordination support for the Safety Management System (SMS) and Health and Safety Program.
  • Communicate health and safety-related information to employees and help implement corrective actions and recommendations.
  • Assist in the development and organization of training manuals, multimedia visual aids and other educational materials.
  • Works in compliance with all Administrative, Health & Safety policies and procedures as per legislative requirements and as outlined in Company policies.
  • Complete any special projects or other tasks as required or assigned.

 

 

Experience and Education Requirements

  • Completion of College/CEGEP/vocational or technical training in Occupational Health and Safety, Human Resources or equivalent. 

  • Minimum (2) years of experience in a Health and Safety role within an aerospace and/or manufacturing environment.
  • Additional training and certification in Adult Education preferred with public speaking experience.
  • Aviation experience is an asset

 

 

Skills/Abilities

  • First Aid/CPR Level A training with Defib is an asset.
  • Ability to lead a functioning JHSC Committee, conducting work pace inspections and accident investigations. JHSC certification is an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable laws and regulations (i.e. Ontario Health & Safety Act, Canada Labour Code and/or Transport Canada etc.)
  • Knowledge and experience developing needs assessments and training programs, as well as, facilitating training in the workplace.
  • Excellent attention to detail, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills to maintain effective relationships with internal and external client groups of the organization, including presentation and facilitations skills.
  • Ability to be professional, tactful, diplomatic and handle confidential and sensitive information pertaining to staff privacy at all times.
  • Provide coaching, mentoring and assistance when identifying development needs of employees.
  • Excellent time management and project management skills.
  • Proficient knowledge of MS Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Internet.
  • Able to work both independently and within team environment.
  • Must have flexibility to adapt to changing demands and schedules, including needs of the organization.
  • Positive attitude, strong sense of responsibility, solution-oriented and willingness to learn.
  • Ability to interpret and apply SDS sheets.
  • Understanding of AS9100 and lean manufacturing principles.
  • Ability to understand and follow direction with minimal supervision.
  • Must hold a valid G license.

 

 

Working Hours

This is a full-time (FT) position where hours will change due to business operational needs and flexibility is required.  At present, the standard hours of work are 8am 5pm, Monday to Friday.

 

 

Working Conditions

  • Frequent walk around inspections of all hangars, manufacturing areas and exterior aircraft ramp areas.
  • 60/40 Desk work versus shop floor work/training
  • Occasionally required to stop or lift light material and/or equipment.
  • Frequent need to give concentrated attention, either hearing, seeing, visualizing, drafting, to what is happening and work being performed.
  • Exposure to chemicals.
  • Comfortable working at heights.
  • Operation of Aerial Lift platforms and Man-lifts.
  • Fast paced environment with competing deadlines.
