GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY

Sewing and Upholstery Technicians are expected to work safely and efficiently at all times.

Candidates should have general knowledge of aircraft cabinets and components, including repairing, modifying, refurbishing, and fabricating aircraft seating and interior components including stripping and re-covering existing interior coverings.

SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Upholstery Technicians fabricate, repair, modify, and refurbish aircraft seats, divans, sidewalls and  associated components, including the re-upholstery of panels, liners and sidewalls, to high degrees of finish quality and structural safety.
  •  Incumbents must demonstrate the ability to work with high-grade leather materials from blueprints, drawings and other illustrations or written work instructions. 
  • Technicians must plan, prepare and cut materials to standardized patterns for stitching and fitting to customer and engineered requirements.
  • Must demonstrate competency in the following accountabilities:
    • The skill to operate industrial, single, multi-needle sewing machines, sergers, overlocks, piping or binding machines. 
    • Must be skilled at operating machines to join sections of seating material (typically, leather) as well as other components into finished products used within aircraft interiors. 
    • Possess all the various skills needed to build and break down a cabin seat. 
    • High attention to detail not only for the purposes of appearance and ergonomics, but also for safety and structural integrity purposes.
    • Certain Technicians in this classification may also measure, cut and prepare foam materials used in the upholstery process.
    • Familiar with breakdown, building up and troubleshooting of aircraft seats and interior components.
    • Ability to strip and recover seats and their components.
    • Ability to match, adhere and fasten together materials or components using adhesives.
    • Ability to fit, build-up, assemble and finish seating and other upholstered components from materials fabricated and manufactured onsite.
  • Performs work in a productive, diligent, careful and safe manner.
  • Complete any special projects or other tasks as required or assigned. May be assigned to other areas of operations, based on business or customer requirements.
  • Works in compliance with all Administrative, Health & Safety policies and procedures as per legislative requirements and as outlined in Company policies

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Minimum of 5 years of related upholstery experience or applicable education preferred.  Sewing experience in Corporate Aviation / Aerospace required. High School Diploma/GED preferred.  Basic knowledge of elementary algebra, understanding engineer drawings, use of precision measuring instruments and equipment. 

Applicants with industrial sewing and upholstery experience are preferred.  Applicants must have extensive, practical industrial sewing and upholstery experience, ideally working with seating and leather materials.  Seamstress / sewers must have the additional qualifications and skill to masterfully operate Double needle machine, Multi-needle machine, Leather stitching machine, Piping or binding machine, Tacker or bartack machinery.

Candidates must be able to understand and work from blueprints as well as other written instructions and design specifications.  Strong mathematical knowledge is required, as is the ability to make accurate measurements and finish materials to a high level of quality and precision.

Other required skills include:

  • Excellent planning, organization and coordination skills.
  • Excellent judgment, strong attention to detail

SKILLS/COMPENTENCY REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to communicate with internal and external customers in both written and oral form Teach and present new ideas and methods to junior personnel Ability to use power tools, commercial sewing machines, sergers and/or various hand tools used in upholstery and carpet trades Demonstrated computer skills Must have own hand tools Full time position, overtime may be required
